In short: your consumer unit is work for a certified specialist
Fitting solar panels on your roof is installation work — that’s done by our own fitters. But the moment the installation is connected to your consumer unit and put on the grid, it’s electrical work with rules of its own. That we always have done by a certified electrician with the right specialisation. They connect the consumer unit and issue the official certificate — the boletín. So it’s something we deliberately do not “just do ourselves”.
What happens at your consumer unit
Connecting up involves more than fastening a cable:
- the inverter is linked up and the installation is connected to your consumer unit (cuadro);
- the right safety devices are fitted, so everything is safe;
- the installation is connected to the grid to the Spanish standard (REBT);
- the electrician issues the boletín / CIE — the official proof that your installation is safe and complies with the law.
Why “just having it checked over” isn’t allowed
Some companies connect everything themselves and have a certified fitter simply sign it off afterwards. That isn’t just sloppy — it’s simply not permitted. Whoever signs the boletín takes on the legal responsibility that the installation is correct and safe. And that responsibility can’t be handed to someone who didn’t do the work themselves. A signature under someone else’s work isn’t a valid certification.

A properly connected consumer unit with a valid boletín isn’t a formality. It decides three things that affect you later:
- Safety — a wrongly connected installation is a fire risk. The boletín certifies precisely that it’s safe.
- Your insurance — many home insurers won’t cover damage from a poorly carried-out installation. With a certified connection and your paperwork in order, you’re on firm ground.
- A valid connection — without a boletín, the grid operator won’t officially connect you, and you’ll hit trouble later at sale or with insurance.
