What expanding with Solarfit involves

Your system grows with you — with more panels, storage or independence.

Solarfit installer carrying a solar panel to expand an existing system

The options

More panels, storage or off-grid

Using more than you used to, or want more self-use? We add extra panels, fit a home battery or convert to off-grid. But first we check whether your existing system can take the expansion technically — does it fit within your inverter's capacity, and do the new panels match the old ones in output (too big a gap causes loss)? If the system is too old, we'll advise you honestly to replace it rather than build something on it that won't fit. We also check your main connection, cable sizes and circuit fuses — not every consumer unit can take the extra current. If the expansion won't sit neatly on your existing inverter, we fit a separate, standalone system alongside. On a system someone else fitted too.

How we expand your system

Already have panels? We survey your existing system remotely and expand it — more panels, a home battery or a switch to off-grid. If we installed your panels and inverter, we already know it and the expansion can often be handled entirely remotely.

A phone call about expanding your system

Call us and we'll pick up your enquiry straight away; enquire online and we'll ring you back — always in English. We go through your existing system, someone else's too, and discuss what you'd like to add — more panels, a home battery, or a switch to off-grid. With a few photos of your consumer unit and your current inverter we can see what fits, without anyone needing to visit yet.

Frequently asked questions

The questions we're asked most about expanding your system.

Can I add new panels to my existing ones, even a different make or age?

Yes. It works fine, but the art is in how we connect them — new panels are best put on their own inverter input, so old and new don't hold each other back. Mix them into the same string and the output drops to the weakest panel. We look at your existing setup and choose the connection that gets the most out of both old and new.

Do I need a new or bigger inverter?

Not always. If your current inverter still has room, we connect the extra panels to it. If it's already full, or we want to keep old and new separate, we add a small extra inverter or microinverters — often cheaper than replacing your whole inverter.

Does my warranty stay valid if you expand my system?

On the new panels and parts you simply get new manufacturer's warranty. If we installed your existing system, that stays covered. If it's someone else's, we work around it carefully — but bear in mind that installer's warranty may lapse once a third party works on their installation. We tell you honestly up front where you stand.

What if my existing system isn't installed properly or legally?

Before we build on your existing system, we always check whether it's installed correctly and whether the paperwork and legalisation are in order. If it isn't, we inspect it first and bring it up to standard where needed — we discuss that openly with you and put together a suitable quote for it, so your system is safe and legal. If the system is old or in poor condition, replacing it all at once with new is often the better investment; we'll put that choice to you honestly too.

Does an expansion need to be legalised again?

Yes. If you increase your system's output, the expansion must be registered again with the authorities, and your feed-in contract is updated. We handle that paperwork entirely for you, just as with a new installation — you don't need to do a thing.
