In short: yes, a charging point must be legalised
Many people don’t realise it, but a charging point (punto de recarga) for your electric car is an electrical installation you have to legalise officially in Spain — just like solar panels. That’s set out in the standard ITC-BT-52. The good news: just as with your solar panels, we take it entirely off your hands.
What the legalisation involves
For a standard home charging point (up to 10 kW, indoors) you need:
- a memoria técnica — the technical design document, drawn up by a certified installer;
- the boletín / CIE — the electrical certificate confirming the connection is safe;
- registration with Industria (via the Generalitat Valenciana).
If the charging point is more powerful — over 10 kW or installed outdoors — then a proyecto técnico from a técnico is required.
Live in a flat with a communal garage?
Then you’re fine: you have the right to install a charging point in your own parking space. You only need to notify the owners’ community (comunidad) beforehand — no approval or vote is required.
Why it matters
An unlegalised charging point carries the same risks as unlegalised solar panels: trouble with your insurance, problems when you sell your home, and no proof that the connection is certified safe. With the right paperwork you’re free of worry.
