Not every GoodWe is the same — why we choose the full version

In short: the same brand name doesn’t mean the same inverter

GoodWe makes the same inverter in two versions: a full one and a cheaper, stripped-back “M” version. They share the brand name, the housing and almost the same type number — but the M gives your battery about half the power. We always fit the full version. On a quote you won’t see that difference; in a power cut you will.

The difference you can’t see from the outside

Take the 6 kW inverter. The full version (GW6000-ES-20) lets your battery charge and discharge at around 6 kW; the M version (GW6000M-ES-20) caps that at 3.2 kW — roughly half. Which means: in a power cut, the full version runs your air conditioning, your pump and your fridge at the same time; the M version falls back to some lighting and your router.

Same box, same brand, same spot on your wall. The only difference is inside — and that’s precisely the difference you buy a battery for.

The M version isn’t bad — it’s meant for people who don’t need strong backup. But most people don’t know they’re getting it, and end up paying for a backup that isn’t there.

What that means for your quote

So “a GoodWe 6 kW” doesn’t tell you everything on its own — the same name and the same kW can mean quite different backup. We’ve already made that choice for you: we always put the full version in the quote, the one that runs your battery at full power, with the exact type alongside it. So you’re guaranteed the version that genuinely covers your backup — never the stripped-back one by accident.

You can spot the stripped-back version by the code: an M after the power rating (GW6000M-ES-20). That M never appears in our quote.

That’s why we always put the exact type in your quote, so you know precisely what you’re getting and what you’re comparing against. More expensive on paper here simply means: more inverter.

Our GoodWe choice, case by case

Which full GoodWe you get depends on your home:

In every case the full version, never the stripped-back one. Our general approach — matching the inverter to your home — is in Why we choose the inverter that fits your home.

What you get for it

  • Real backup — your battery delivers full power when the grid goes down.
  • A fair comparison — you know the exact type, so you’re comparing like with like.
  • No surprises — you pay for the inverter you think you’re getting.

What we do for you

We put the exact type in your quote, explain which version you’re getting and why, and choose the one that suits your home and your backup needs. So you know what you’re buying — and why it adds up with us.

Do collect a couple of quotes — it’s the sensible thing to do, and we’d rather you bought with your eyes open. Just make sure each one names the full type. And ask us for references from customers near you; hearing it from a neighbour beats hearing it from us.
